Accessibility

Accessibility statement

We want this site to work for everyone, including people using a screen reader, keyboard only, magnification or speech input.

The standard we build to

This website is built to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA. That is the standard referenced by the Americans with Disabilities Act guidance and by Section 508.

Accessibility is not a one-time task. We check it when we change the site, and we would rather hear about a problem than have someone quietly give up on the page.

What we have done

Specific measures on this site, each one verified rather than assumed:

  • Every text and background pair on the site meets or exceeds the WCAG AA contrast minimum, including text set over photographs, which we measure against the composited pixels rather than against the intended color.
  • A skip link lets keyboard users jump straight past the navigation to the main content.
  • All interactive elements show a visible focus outline, and the whole site can be operated from the keyboard.
  • Images carry descriptive alternative text. Images that are purely decorative are marked so screen readers skip them.
  • Headings run in order, one H1 per page, so the document outline is navigable.
  • Form fields have real labels tied to their inputs, and required fields are marked in text rather than by color alone.
  • Landmarks (header, navigation, main, footer) are marked up so assistive technology can jump between regions.
  • Motion respects the prefers-reduced-motion setting. Nothing moves or auto-advances for someone who has asked their system to reduce motion.
  • The site is responsive and remains usable at 320px wide and at 200 percent zoom without horizontal scrolling.

Known limits

Videos on this site are hosted on YouTube and we link out to them rather than embedding them. Captions on those videos are provided by YouTube and we do not control their accuracy.

If you find something else that does not work, it is a defect and we want to know.

Tell us about a barrier

Call (207) 324-6232 or email us and describe what you were trying to do and what got in the way. Include the page address if you have it. We will reply and tell you what we are doing about it.

If you need information from this site in another format, ask and we will provide it.
